16th May, 2018
Welcome to our May/June newsletter!
We would like to welcome the following children and their families to our nursery: Aarushi, Ella, Madeleine, Jude, Savannah and William G (all Baby Room).
Babies and Teenies activities
The Babies and Teenies have been talking about different fruits and vegetables, textures (senses), and toys. The children have also been learning how to hold bottles, and spoons, and to feed themselves with support.
Why not continue these activities at home by cutting different fruits in front of your child and talk about their shapes and colours. This will help your child to develop their language skills.
The babies have been learning to sit by themselves and to hold bottles. They have also been learning to play alongside other children within a small group.
Toddler and Preschool activities
The Toddlers (2-3 year-olds) and Pre-school (3-5 year-olds) children have been
talking about different vehicles, primary colours, days of the week, and how to put on shoes and take them off.
The Preschool children concentrated on writing their names, and even writing their first poems with the help of their teachers. The children also planted the first seeds in our garden, and the first flowers and vegetables are now visible!
The Preschool children have been concentrating on the letters ‘J’,’K’,’L’ and ‘M’.
The Toddlers have been learning about table manners, and how to use cutlery properly. Some of the Toddlers have been potty or toilet training, and this is going very well.
The Toddlers have been learning the days of the week through singing.
Why not sing our favourite nursery song with your child while bathing them:
”Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and then we start again” repeat and “And then this song ends.”
I am sure that your children will provide you with the tune for this!
Positive word of the month
“Humanity” is our word of the month for May, and we will be talking about “Trust” in June.
Language of the month
Our languages of the months of May and June are French and German, respectively.

Low uptake of shared parental leave
Despite a campaign by the Government’s Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to encourage shared parental leave rights in the UK, only 3% of eligible parents have taken advantage of the shared leave (approximately 285,000 couples qualify each year). This compares with around 90% in Iceland.
Did you know…….
The nursery provides organic milk for the children. Research has shown that organic milk has more antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, and vitamins than non-organic milk. Organic cows are pasture grazed, resulting in better milk quality than non-organic cows.
With the warmer weather finally upon us, please bring in sun hats for your child. Please label these with your child’s name. We will also be applying sun cream to the children before we venture outside. If you would prefer your child not to use the nursery’s sun cream (Nivea), please let us know. You are welcome to bring your own sun cream for your child.
Scooters and bicycles
I have noticed that a few children come into nursery on scooters. Please note that we cannot accommodate scooters and bicycles in the buggy storage area as we are tight on space. Our Landlord allows the nursery to use this shared space to store buggies at their discretion, provided that there is no obstruction of the fire doors and fire exit route.
Please take your child’s scooter and bicycle home and do not leave at the nursery.
Please ensure that pushchairs are stored folded and upright in the buggy storage area to ensure that all pushchairs can fit into the area. Please do not place pushchairs flat on the floor, as this takes up valuable space and can be damaged if other pushchairs are placed on top. Just a reminder that pushchairs must not block either of the double doors next to the buggy area (marked by silver tape), nor the stairway, as this is our fire exit route. Pushchairs must not be left in the nursery
This has been an ongoing problem, and is breaching our safeguarding and health and safety policy, as children can be hurt in the event of an evacuation. Also, myself and my staff are spending a lot of time organising the pushchairs, and this is taking us away from our daily duties and is no longer acceptable. If you are the first to arrive, please DO NOT put your pushchair flat on the floor. Please leave your pushchair upright at the back of the storage area to allow enough space for other pushchairs.
Also, please do not bring pushchairs into the rooms. We need to keep the carpets clean for the children at all times, as they often play on the floors. Thank you for your co-operation.
Please ensure that your child has enough clean, spare clothes in their rucksacks each time they come to the nursery. We will be doing more water play with the children, and also children who are potty/toilet training will require spare clothes. Thank you.
Staff inset days/nursery closure
Please note that our staff inset days this year will be on Friday 13th July and Friday 23rd November when the nursery will be closed. These are essential staff training days that will benefit both staff and children.
Please note that monthly fees take INSET days into consideration so that you are not charged. Please make alternative childcare arrangements for these days.
Emergency mobile telephone number
If you need to call the nursery, please phone our nursery landline on 020 8840 1116. If for any reason the landline is down, please call the emergency nursery mobile on 07745219888 (please do not leave voicemail or text messages on the nursery mobile. Messages may, however, be left by email). If in doubt, you can contact Head Office on 01442 878887.
If you require extra sessions at the nursery, please let me know. Please give as much notice as possible, as we need to ensure that our staff to child ratios are met at all times. However, if you have a last minute request for extra sessions, we will try to accommodate when possible. Please check with us whether we can accommodate extra sessions for your child before you bring your child into the nursery. Please note that extra sessions must be paid for prior to attendance and cannot be cancelled once booking has been confirmed.
This also applies to parents requiring an early drop in (7:30), as sometimes we are unable to accommodate your request because of our staff:child ratio. The nursery will open at 08:00 should we not have any children for 07:30 starts, and we would therefore be unable to change this mid-week because of our advance-planned staff shift rotas.
If your child is unwell or intends to be away from the nursery for any reason (eg, holidays or sickness), please could you let us know as soon as possible. This helps us to plan our activities and staff rotas.
Please note that nursery fees are payable when your child is off sick or away on holiday, as specified on our Terms and Conditions. In addition, registered attendance days cannot be changed or swapped.
Please could all parents ensure that they pick up their child promptly as soon as their nursery session finishes at 1 pm or 6 pm. Late collection is disruptive and can affect our staff/child ratios. Late collection charges will apply.
The nursery closes at 6:00 pm. Please pick up your child before this time to allow for feedback about your child. Your consideration would be much appreciated.
Contacting the nursery
If you need to contact the nursery, please telephone us on our landline. You may also email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, but please be aware that I am not always at my desk to pick up emails throughout the day. Please phone me for anything urgent, or for anything that needs my same-day attention.
Children’s development profiles
Your child’s development profile is available for you to see at any time. Just ask your child’s key person if you wish to view this.
If you have any concerns, queries or suggestions, please feel free to speak to me at any time.
Thank you for supporting us and have a lovely summer!
