6th September 2019
Welcome to our September/October newsletter!
I hope that you all enjoyed the glorious summer break!
We would lke to welcome the following children and their families to our nursery: Alyssa K, Colette, Kiyan, Magnus, Pia, and Rory (all Baby Room); and Aloys and Edgar (both Preschool Room).
I am pleased to announce that Hamda Bulale and Olga Yagodintseva have joined the Monkey Puzzle team as Nursery Assistants. Hamda has a BA in Education Studies and previously worked as a Learning Support Assistant. Olga has worked as an au pair, and plays the violin and piano!
Arleta is currently taking a sabbatical to complete an internship and will be back with us in December.
Welcome, Hamda and Olga!
Babies and Teenies activities
The Babies and Teenies have been talking about different places and about dinosaurs, with the use of different books and flash cards. The children have also been learning how to feed themselves and hold beakers.
Some of our babies have now started to walk, much to the excitement of parents and staff!
The older babies have been learning to pronounce simple word and sentences, and have been using crayons in their preferred hand. The children have also been learning to count from one to five. The older babies are learning to share, and to help tidy up by putting toys in their correct boxes.
Why not continue this activity at home by counting while playing with your
child. Count the chairs around tables, or pictures on the walls, together.
Toddler and Preschool activities
The Toddlers (2-3 year-olds) and Pre-school (3-5 year-olds) children have been talking about different jobs and places to visit. The children all had plenty to say about places they had visited over the summer holidays. They also participated in a lovely activity around different jobs. The children have also been learning to recognise and write their names, and learning about different colours and shapes.
Some of our Toddlers have been focusing on potty training and learning about the importance of good hand washing.
The children also talked about sharing and taking turns, especially during our sports session. The Toddlers have taken a great interest in dinosaurs, and have produced a beautiful art display on the topic!
The Preschool children have been talking about schools and their families. They have also talked about the different seasons and senses. The Preschoolers have produced an interesting display on these topics, which can be seen in the Preschool Room.
The Preschool children have been learning to hold pencils properly, and to recognise and write their names and simple sentences. The children have also been learning to add and subtract simple numbers.
Why not continue this at home by introducing ‘special writing time’, helping your child to hold a pencil correctly, and helping them to write simple words. Please feel free to bring your child’s writing into the nursery to show their nursery friends!
The children also looked at different vegetables brought from a farm. Our Nursery Cook, Lisa, then prepared these vegetables for the children to taste. The children used clay modelling to form the shape of the fruits/vegetables before painting them.
Why not arrange to visit a farm with your child. Your child will take an interest in where fruits and vegetables come from, and they will enjoy picking the fruit/vegetable themselves!
Word of the month
‘Patience’ is our word of the month for September. We will be talking about ‘friendship’ as our word of the month for October.
Language of the month
Our languages of the months of September and October are Italian and German, respectively.

Did you know…….
The nursery is committed to contributing to a greener environment. We try to create a paperless nursery wherever possible (all newsletters and invoices are sent to parents by email). All waste generated at the nursery is bagged together and sorted for recycling by a specialist company.
Extra-curricular ballet and sports
Our extra-curricular ballet and sports sessions will re-commence from September. Ballet is scheduled for Thursdays, for all children over 18 months-old, and sport will be on Tuesdays for all children over 2-years-old. The children have enjoyed these sessions in the past, helping to boost their self-confidence and allowing children to enjoy the activities with their Monkey Puzzle teachers who support our extra-curricular ballet and sports teachers. Ballet sessions will again be taken by Megan Metts (Principal of Ealing School of Dance), and sports sessions will be taken by Joshua Mangan from The London Sports Trust. Both these extra-curricular activities are provided by Monkey Puzzle Ealing without additional charge.
Adam Hollier, from Adam Hollier Photography, will be coming to the nursery on Tuesday 29th October 2019 to take individual photographs of the children. Adam has taken photographs of the children at our nursery over the past four year. Photographs can be viewed and ordered directly through Adam’s website (details nearer the time).
Please feel free to bring special clothes, or Christmas-themed clothes, for your child, particularly if you wish to use the photos as Christmas cards. Adam will be at the nursery in the morning, from around 9:00 am. If your child does not usually attend nursery on a Tuesday, please feel free to drop by with your child to have a photograph taken. If you do not wish your child to be photographed, please let me know.
Children’s Christmas lunch and party
The children will have Christmas lunch on 5th December, for those children attending on that day. This will be followed by activities and a visit from Santa. Further details will be provided nearer the time, but please note the date in your diaries.
Toys from home
Several of our Toddlers and Preschool children have been bringing their toys from home into the nursery. Please discourage your child from doing this (except if used as a sleep comforter). We understand that children are attached to some special toys, but these can be lost or inadvertently hidden in the nursery, leading to upset children. It is time consuming trying to locate these toys at the end of the day, when staff are at their busiest and need to be in ratio with the children. If your child insists on bringing a toy with them to nursery, please ensure that these remain in their bags before they enter the nursery.
Food from home
It has come to my attention that a few children have been bringing food into the nursery. Please ensure that children finish what they are eating before coming into the nursery, as we have children with severe food allergies at the nursery.
Bringing cakes to the nursery
Please refrain from bringing cakes or sweets into the nursery for celebrations. The exception is birthday cakes, only if you wish. The nursery discourages children from eating excessive sugar, and we avoid sugar in our menus at the nursery. We also have children at the nursery with allergies who then feel excluded. May I recommend that, if you do want to bring something into the nursery, then fresh fruit, or bread made at home with your child, would be appreciated and would allow all the children in the nursery to enjoy together.
A simple recipe for bread can be found on the following website:
Toddlers using dummies
A few of our Toddlers are still using dummies for sleep, and some of the children are coming into the nursery with dummies. Can we all please work together to discourage the use of dummies for this age group, as this is an important time in a child’s life when language development is crucial. Using a dummy for most of the day can impede this development.
Spare clothes and nappies
Please ensure that your child has enough spare clothes in their bags, especially if your child has started potty training. Children will also need indoor and outdoor shoes.
Please also ensure that your child’s rucksack is take home daily, as we do not have enough space in the nursery to store these.
Please also bring nappies into the nursery promptly when asked by our staff. Nappies are also required for children who are potty trained but still using nappies for sleep.
Updating children’s information
Please email me if you have changed address or phone number and have not informed us yet. Please also let me know if your child’s dietary requirements have changed.
Please also email me if any other member of your family or friend will be picking up your child, to avoid waiting around while we check that the person picking up your child is on your approved list.
Nursery closure for INSET day
Our next INSET day this year will be on Friday 29th November 2019. The nursery will be closed on this day for essential staff training. Please arrange alternative childcare.
Please note that monthly fees take INSET days into consideration so that you are not charged.
Nursery opening/closing time
I would like to remind all parents that the nursery opens at 8:00 am. Please do not come earlier and do not enter the Nursery before 8:00 am as our staff will be conducting risk assessments and prepare the nursery for breakfast before 8:00 am. Please do not ring the bell before 8:00 am to avoid delays in our preparation of the nursery for opening.
Please also note that the nursery closes at 6:00 pm. Please come to collect your child prior to 6:00 pm to allow a few minutes for feedback. A few parents have arrived late for collection recently.
Thank you to all parents for storing pushchairs folded and upright in the buggy storage area. Your continued co-operation is much appreciated and will ensure that all parents can access their pushchairs with ease. Please do not leave pushchairs at the nursery overnight.
Scooters and bicycles
Please do not bring scooters or bicycles into the nursery, as we do not have space to store these.
Emergency mobile telephone number
If you need to call the nursery, please phone our nursery landline on 020 8840 1116. If for any reason the landline is down, please call the emergency nursery mobile on 07745219888 (please do not leave voicemail or text messages on the nursery mobile. Messages may, however, be left by email). If in doubt, you can contact Head Office on 01442 878887.
If you require extra sessions at the nursery, please let me know. Please give as much notice as possible, as we need to ensure that our staff to child ratios are met at all times. However, if you have a last minute request for extra sessions, we will try to accommodate when possible. Please check with us whether we can accommodate extra sessions for your child before you bring your child into the nursery. Please note that extra sessions must be paid for prior to attendance and cannot be cancelled once booking has been confirmed.
If your child is unwell or intends to be away from the nursery for any reason (eg, holidays or sickness), please could you let us know as soon as possible. This helps us to plan our activities and staff rotas.
Please note that nursery fees are payable when your child is off sick or away on holiday, as specified in our Terms and Conditions. In addition, registered attendance days cannot be changed or swapped.
Please could all parents ensure that they pick up their child promptly as soon as their nursery session finishes at 1 pm or 6 pm. Late collection is disruptive and can affect our staff/child ratios. Late collection charges will apply.
Contacting the nursery
If you need to contact the nursery, please telephone us on our landline. You may also email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, but please be aware that I am not always at my desk to pick up emails throughout the day. Please phone me for anything urgent, or for anything that needs my same-day attention.
Children’s development profiles
Your child’s development profile is available for you to see at any time. Just ask your child’s key person if you wish to view this.
If you have any concerns, queries or suggestions, please feel free to speak to me at any time.
