We recently met up with Aarti, our Monkey Puzzle Guildford Manager, to discuss what they do as a nursery to prepare their children for school.

“Hi, I’m Aarti, the Nursery Manager here at Monkey Puzzle Ealing. I bring years of experience as a Preschool Room Leader into this role, and I’m proud to lead a team that’s dedicated to giving children the best start before school.”
Preparing Little Learners for Big School
We focus on reading, writing, maths, independence, and social development through purposeful play and daily routines.
Building Early Literacy Skills
“Story time is a big part of our day, we encourage children to read stories back to us, answer questions, and choose their own books. They also see their names displayed around the room and are encouraged to write their names on drawings to take home.”
Encouraging Independence and Responsibility
From self-serving meals to choosing whether to play indoors or out, our preschoolers are empowered to make choices.
“We encourage them to set the table, clean up after themselves, and take ownership of their environment. It builds confidence and helps them feel prepared for the routines of school.”
Laying Strong Foundations in Maths
Through play-based learning, we introduce early maths concepts.
“We use puzzles, peg boards, shape threading, and real-life opportunities like counting plates and cups during meal prep. It’s all about making maths meaningful.”
Learning to Share, Take Turns, and Resolve Conflicts
“We model positive behaviour, and support children in understanding how to navigate friendships and social situations through turn-taking games and open conversations,” Aarti explains.
Getting Ready for the School Routine
“Some children start practicing wearing their school uniforms. We talk about what to expect, new teachers, bigger classrooms, and making new friends. We also involve parents, offering tips and sharing stories to help prepare the whole family.”
Tracking Progress and Supporting Every Step
“We carry out regular observations and assessments, and all progress is shared with parents through our ‘Famly’ app,” says Aarti. “Parents are always welcome to chat with us about their child’s development.”
